From the Ashes Wolodymyr Mohuchy 9781483648385 Books Reviews

A biography that easily reads like a novel. You feel you are a first hand witness, a part of the family.
The period between the two world wars in Ukraine is not well known and the author Wolodymyr Mohuchy gives much information and insight about it.
Typical story of many inhabitants of Ukraine
Very good written historical novel reflecting true historical facts covering life of a family in Ukraine during the period 1918 through 1945.
It is a very informative story during WWII under Stalin the suffering that occurred among Ukrainians.
I would highly recommend it to read.
An moving read, especially for any one familiar with Ukraine or Ukrainians. This work provides valuable insight into the Ukrainian national idea and shows why the preservation of the Ukrainian culture is so important to so many.
This book took me to the Urkraine during the war torn era of which many so easily forget. It's the true story of the struggle of a faithful family to survive and encourge their community during the most difficult of times in a place so unforgiving it boggles the mind! The author's command of the english language will take you away from where you are and set you right at the table with the family as they eagerly await the smallest morsel of food in soup form. You can almost smell the broth and sense the tention in the air! I have to admit it made my heart pound and even made me cry a little. The courage of the family is inspiring! It left me wanting more......
A gut wrenching and chilling true narration of the indomitable human spirit of a young couple and their families will to survive the evils and tyranny of Bolshevism, the inhumane horrors and genocide of Stalin's artificial famine, and the heinous World War II Nazi occupation and Soviet oppression of Ukraine. It represents a microcosm of what millions of Ukrainian families had to endure for survival during these bleak periods. This is a harrowing story that had to be told before there is no one left to retell it. It is written in historical novel prose, and WWII fans and readers of authors Alex Kershaw, Rick Atkinson, Stephen Ambrose, Simon Sebag Montefiore, Alan Furst, Ken Follett, Philip Kerr,to name a few, will undoubtedly enjoy.
I initially did not expect much from an e-book. But within 20 pages of "From the Ashes", I was wondering why this gripping saga was not yet in published form, sitting on Barnes & Noble shelves. This real-life tale has something for everyone history, war, romance, spirituality and suspense. Historical novels and biography are common stock among the literati. This book is so much more. It is a hauntingly personal diary, a wistful voice from the past, from an age and era vanished in the winds of time and progress. Few may remember the hardscrabble Ukraine of the early 20th Century, battered by false hopes and hopeful nationalism, crushed under the heel of relentless tyranny. Caught in the maelstrom is a proud and resourceful religious family who suffer separation, exile, prison, war and ultimately, death, but never lose their spiritual core--or their will to live. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed by "From the Ashes". If nothing else, it is a vitally important history lesson.
